Why you need Medicare Supplements insurance:
As we get older our health begins to deteriorate and we are all faced with the uncertainty of medical expenses and related costs.
Medicare does not pay all the costs. You are responsible for a portion of medical expenses such as physician services, inpatient and outpatient medical and surgical services and supplies, physical and speech therapy, diagnostic test, and durable medical equipment.
After the deductible you are liable for 20% of these charges. During this day and age, 20% can be devastating!
Who qualifies:
Only those currently enrolling or already enrolled in Medicare A and B can purchase this insurance. Anyone over 65 should sign on during the six-month period (known as open enrollment) immediately following his or her enrollment in Medicare B. Any delay in enrollment may result in coverage being denied if not in good health.
What Medicare Supplement Insurance or "Medigap" covers:
For 2008, Medicare has a $1,024 deductible per illness for Part A and a $135 deductible for Part B. These deductibles increase each year. Without a Medicare Supplement, you are also responsible for a 20% coinsurance payment in addition to your Part B deductible. You may also be responsible for excess doctor charges that are above what Medicare pays. When you think a stay in hospital these days can cost upwards of $40,000; you would be responsible to pay approximately $9,000 of this yourself.
Medigap policies cover such Medicare costs, including deductibles and coinsurance. The more comprehensive plans may also provide some coverage for emergency foreign travel, skilled nursing coinsurance, at-home recovery, and doctors charges in excess of the Medicare guidelines.
